THE BVI HUMANE SOCIETY FLOOD MITIGATION

​A watershed is an area of land where all water that falls within it eventually drains off into a shared location. The Josiah’s Bay watershed drains into the second largest wetland pond on Tortola. Any developments within this watershed have potential to destroy this fragile habitat if a development upland of the pond lacks proper drainage to slow and filter rainwater and effluent that eventually makes its way to the pond.

​ARK and U.S based Watershed Consulting Associates LLC. has partnered with the BVI Humane Society to ensure the new shelter won't have an environmental impact on the nearby Josiah’s Bay wetland. Using a Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) concept, this new approach relies on natural features and controlled distribution of runoff to reduce stormwater volume and the pollutants commonly found in stormwater including pesticides, metals, nutrients, and sediment.
